Tribute from your ever loving Goddaughter Claire and your dear friend Millicent (England).

A Tribute to My Dear God Ma Leyinde

It is with sadness that I write this tribute, a sadness that has lain in my heart since I learnt of my dear God Ma’s passing a week and a half ago.  It seems only a few short months ago that I wrote a tribute to you on the occasion of your 90th birthday.  However, it would be remiss of me not to afford you the same respect now.

It was with good reason that Mum chose you to be the Godmother of her youngest child; your friendship was a long and good relationship that span more than 60 years.  You returned the privilege by being a good, supportive and warm Godmother; your interest in me never waned and whenever you were in the UK, you always ensured that Vera gave us a call from wherever you were staying so that you could catch up with both of us.  Likewise, whenever Mum visited the States you were one of her circle of friends that topped her list of people to contact and visit.  Just this summer I went through a number of birthday, Christmas and other greeting cards that I have received over the years from various family and friends.  I kept every single one that I received from you.  I am now so glad that I did so.

Last week I told a friend of your passing and in doing so described you as strong, influential, supportive, a role model – and formidable; a word I always used to describe you.  On the occasions we met over the years, you would always give me that steely look and enquire “and what are you up to young lady?”  That was your own inimitable and warm way of asking after my wellbeing.  The other word I used to describe you was “fun”.  You always were.

Mum feels your passing; another friend of a bygone era has departed.  She repeatedly speaks of you with warmth, and reminisces endlessly about your wonderful and close friendship.  Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Vera, Layard  and the extended family.

Sleep tight, rest in peace,

Your ever loving Goddaughter Claire and your dear friend Millicent (England).
