Tribute from Laurinda Fraser

A tribute to my dear friend Leyinde.

This is very difficult for me to do. Leyinde- Aunty Leyinde to most of you- was like an older sister to me. I am not here to give a tribute in that capacity but to give one professionally as we both worked together as certified nurses in Freetown.

Leyinde and I met at Connaught Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone in the 60’s. She was the matron at that time at the hospital and I was the staff nurse in the operating room. She took me under her wings to educate me about the general lay out of the hospital and also the operating room as I had just returned from the United Kingdom.

Leyinde was my mentor from that time on and one of the best. We worked together for several years. During these years, I learnt a lot from her. She also became a very close friend and confidant.

Leyinde ran Connaught Hospital efficiently. She was one of the best, very strict, and a no nonsense matron. She retired with distinction from government service to start her nursery school named Baana Nursery & Preparatory School at Campbell Street, Freetown.

I couldn’t speak more highly about my friend. Leyinde and I were so close that my two youngest children Ambah and George started their nursery school education at her school. She was also my son George’s godmother.

Leyinde, I miss our weekly phone calls when we chat, laugh and “congosa.” Now, Vera and Layard “una mama don go but una other mama Aunty Laurinda dae for una.” Leyinde, di end don cam and we must say good bye.

Goodbye my friend. May God grant you perfect rest and may light perpetual shine upon you.
