Leyinde Rosa Baana Hannah Susan Pabs-Garnon, Proprietress of Baana Nursery and Preparatory
School, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Hyattsville MD on Wednesday December
14, 2016. She was born in Freetown to the Rev. & Mrs. B L Thomas.
She attended the Annie Walsh Memorial School before proceeding to the UK to study
Nursing and Midwifery. After working briefly for the health system in Freetown,
she started Baana Nursery almost 50 years ago in the living room of her home at 20
Campbell Street in Freetown.
Leyinde’s passion has always been about women and children. She believed that women,
as mothers, need not forgo the benefits of an active career outside the home. She
however recognized that a support system that provided a caring and nurturing environment
for children was necessary for mothers to focus on their professional lives assured
that their children’s best interests were being met while they were at work. She
believed an independent woman made a better wife and mother. She will be remembered
by the many children who started their education at Baana Nursery, and the many parents,
mothers especially, to whom her services and advice were warmly received.
She was active in many social welfare, religious, and cultural organizations like
the Sierra Leone Children’s Home which provided housing for orphaned children, The
Mother’s Union, The Annie Walsh Old Girls Association (AWOGA) and the Krio Descendants
An active puzzler, she enjoyed no better gift than a book of word puzzles. Even
as her eyes failed she could be found working on one or more puzzles with what little
light was available and any visual aid she could lay her hands on. Until her death
she kept mentally and physically active.
She leaves behind her daughters Vera & Juliette, son Layard, grandson Reynold, great
granddaughter Susan, several nieces, nephews and friends together with the Pabs-Garnon,
Coker and Thomas families in Freetown and abroad to mourn her loss.
